DLR’s first full-length effort has him doing his best to make the album sound like Van Halen (alongside veteran VH producer Ted Templeton) while adding a bit more of that Roth humor and silliness and a glossy pop-metal sound. I love Dave, but I prefer him in VH. His solo albums are best taken in small doses. “Yankee Rose” and “Goin’ Crazy!” are absolute classics though.

Highlights: “Yankee Rose”, “I’m Easy”, “Ladies’ Night in Buffalo?”, “Goin’ Crazy!”, “That’s Life”

  1. “I’ll take a bottle of anything…..and a glazed donut…..to go!!”

Classic line! I still say it to people and only my generation gets it!

This was a big deal back in my high school days (freshman year 1986) because we all knew Diamond Dave was THE man, the real deal frontman. If you don’t understand it, you won’t like it. You have to have that particular mindset to understand just what the guy is trying to do. I think he’s a genius with a unique perspective.

The album is good, not as good as clasic VH, but the best of all his solos. ‘Yankee Rose’ was a monster hit and ‘Goin’ Crazy’ was a solid follow-up. I think the biggest problem was Dave’s own OTT persona, the guy is the party and translates that into his music, stage show, and lifestyle…..he had to compete with his former band and they had just released a serious workhorse type of record and then toured stripped down and got back to basics.
