Alice’s sober comeback into the world of rock is more of a template for better albums to come than a good album in itself. There’s only a handful of songs I can really get into here. “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)” definitely stands out. It’s just too bad “Hard Rock Summer”, the other song Alice recorded for Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, wasn’t included here.

Highlights: “Teenage Frankenstein”, “Life and Death of the Party”, “The World Needs Guts”, “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)”

  1. One of the biggest albums of ’86 for me. I was a huge horror movie fan back in the day and Alice paired with Friday the 13th #6 was a big deal. MTV used to play ‘He’s Back’ constantly so I saved my $$$ and bought the tape. Even today, my best friend and I debate Constrictor’s merits in the Alice catalog. ‘Teenage Frankenstein’ is a VH-1 Classic Metal Mania staple now and it was cool as hell back then, same with ‘Thrill My Gorilla’, we loved that tune.

I agree with you on the exclusion of ‘Hard Rock Summer’, that’s a great track and it should’ve been on the album. I picked up the Alice Cooper box set (recommended if you want to sample a great overview of every Alice era) and ‘Hard Rock Summer’ & ‘He’s Back’ are included along with the original demo version of ‘He’s Back’ that’s totally different.

  2. Yep, I have the box set. 🙂 I actually got that before getting Constrictor, so “He’s Back” and “Hard Rock Summer” were a high point in the set for me.

Despite the overall quality of the album, “Teenage Frankenstein” is an Alice classic.
